Dandelion is a natural diuretic, gastric secretion stimulant, mild laxative, and stomachic tonic. It improves appetite and digestion, enhances bile flow, and promotes regularity of bowel movements.
Dandelion is also a mild-acting cleanser and decongestant to liver, gallbladder, and kidney. It affects all forms of secretion and excretion in the body, and removes poisons from the body.
Dandelion enhances liver and gallbladder function and has traditionally been used by herbal healers to treat liver disorders such as jaundice (a condition caused by an excess amount of bile in the blood).
Dandelion is rich in lecithin, a substance researchers believe may protect against cirrhosis of the liver. It is very good for hepatitis which is a slowly progressive disease that develops over decades.
Dandelion is also rich in potassium which works with sodium to regulate the body's water balance and normalize heart rhythms. It reduces high blood pressure (gets rid of excess water and salt, thus reducing the amount of fluid the heart must pump to circulate blood). Its high mineral content may help prevent iron-deficiency anemia.
Dandelion is a very slow-acting food herb which can be consumed in large quantities over long periods of time. The herb takes weeks to months to really begin showing its effects.
