Syndrome X

Blood-Sugar Balance

Specially Formulated Product Targeting Syndrome X

What is Syndrome X?

It is being called one of the largest disease epidemics to strike North America. It can dramatically increase the risk of most age-related health issues such as obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, eye disease, diabetes, nervous system disorders, heart disease, cancer and Alzheimer's disease. It can also make you feel exhausted, "spacey", depressed, irritable or angry when you normally wouldn't be. Syndrome X is coming from our own lifestyle and diet.

Syndrome X is a name used to describe a cluster of abnormalities. It is a form of insulin resistance caused by some basic, dietary factors. If you are feeling sluggish or having a hard time losing a few extra pounds, Syndrome X might be your health issue.

Glucose and insulin. These are the two main players in this life-and-death drama. Glucose is a simple sugar, also called blood sugar, and is the principle fuel for all cells in the body. Insulin is a hormone, made in the pancreas, which allows glucose to enter the cells where it can be used for energy. When we increase our blood sugar levels by eating food, insulin is produced and we absorb the glucose into our cells. When we eat foods that greatly increase our blood sugar levels, we must then produce more and more insulin to try and absorb the glucose.

When we have high insulin levels, day after day, year after year, we become more resistant to the insulin, and this starts to create problems in the body. Thus, Syndrome X is also being called Insulin Resistance and Metabolic Syndrome.

This situation compounds itself, because insulin also promotes the formation of fat through a process called lipogenesis. This means that the more insulin a person produces, the more likely they are to gain weight. If this is compounded by a lack of physical activity, which burns glucose, reduces insulin and lowers fat, we get an increased fat-to-muscle ratio. The increase in fat cells and reduction of muscle cells reduce the efficiency of the body's ability to burn glucose. If this ratio gets too out of hand, over a long period of time, not only does the person become more pear-shaped and overweight, they risk developing Syndrome X, diabetes and even heart disease.

SYN X

SYN X contains a patented form of Fenugreek, called FENULIFE™, a Canadian-grown product from Saskatchewan. FENULIFE™ is deodorized to remove the unpleasant odour that can result from taking Fenugreek supplements. The Fenugreek is then defatted, leaving an 80% fibre (galactomannan) content. This means that 80% of the herb is the de- sired, active ingredient, and much smaller doses can be taken to achieve the same results. When Fenugreek was originally tested for its capacity to work on Syndrome X-related illnesses, it was found that 25 grams per day needed to be taken in order to achieve the desired effects. This dosage amount is greatly decreased with a standardized fibre percentage. Instead of 25 grams, that amount goes down to 3 to 5 grams per day.

By using the Glycemic Index (as a general and common sense guideline) combined with SYN X, the risk factors for Syndrome can begin to decline. During Phase I (one month), it is recommended to take a "saturation-dose"; this is key to getting the desired results. Phase II of SYN X is a maintenance phase, at a decreased daily dosage. A general Glycemic Index guide is contained in each box of SYN X. SYN X also contains Alpha Lipoic Acid, Gymnema (Gymnema sylvestre) and Bitter Melon (Momordica charantia). These are additional supplements, combined to work in unison with FENULIFE™. Their supportive action enhances the desired effect of SYN X.

Herbal Indications

FENULIFE™ (Deodorized Fenugreek Seed Extract -80% fibre) -Traditionally used to aid in the control of blood sugar levels. This herb is considered an excel- lent herb for diabetics and also a hypocholesterolaemic (lowers blood cholesterol). Large doses of the herb can cause unwanted effects such as body odour and flatulence. This standardized form of Fenugreek does not require a large dosage, and eliminates these unpleasant side effects while still meeting effective dosage requirements.

ALPHA LIPOIC ACID ¡V Besides being a powerful anti-oxidant, Alpha Lipoic Acid is said to convert glucose into energy (i.e. it increases the efficiency of cellular energy production from glucose). This addition to SYN X plays a key role in decreasing resistance to insulin.

GYMNEMA (Gymnema sylvestre) ¡V An Ayurvedic herb from India, Gymnema is a traditional herb for blood sugar reduction. This mechanism is to increase the efficiency of insulin in the body.

BITTER MELON (Momordica charantia) ¡V Another herb based on long-standing traditional use, Bitter Melon is derived from the Orient and has been used to lower blood sugar levels. In its modern context, Bitter Melon has been shown to improve cellular utilization of dietary glucose.

The Glycemic Index

The real key to lowering these high levels of insulin is to eat foods that create less blood sugar spikes in the body. Less blood sugar- less insulin production. Foods that are high in carbohydrates cause the most significant rise in blood sugar and insulin. So do foods high in all types of sugar. A Glycemic Index measures how much the blood sugar will increase at certain intervals after eating a particular food. Proteins and fats score low on the Glycemic Index (GI), while breads, packaged cereals, cakes and cookies all score very high.

By eating foods with a low Glycemic Index score, you can keep blood sugar and insulin levels within a healthier range, and decrease or reverse the symptoms associated with Syndrome X. Try taking the Syndrome X Questionnaire to determine your risks for this common disorder.
